Secure Remote Access

Secure remote access is the ability to connect to and utilize UW Medicine computers, systems or data from a remote location in a safe and secure manner. This type of access can be used for many reasons, including desktop access, data access, vendor support access and remote monitoring to name a few.

UW Medicine Information Security Policy SEC05.03 requires that all access to confidential UW Medicine resources from a remote site (i.e., locations outside the UW Medicine network) be encrypted and that devices used for remote access must meet the information security requirements as outlined in the Networked System Information Security Standard.

The Security Program provides individual and site-to-site remote access options which provide for secure internet connectivity to many UW Medicine protected resources.

Personal Remote Access

A UW Medicine workforce member needing secure access to UW Medicine resources from a remote location over the Internet (e.g., home, conference, hotel, etc.) can use one of the following SIT-provided remote access products listed below.

Site-to-Site Remote Access

Secure site-to-site VPN connections are created to facilitate secure information exchange or secure group access to UW Medicine resources from a remote site. These types of connections are usually needed for vendor support/troubleshooting, HL7 interface exchange or third-party system access. SIT provides several managed platforms for this type of VPN access. To request site-to-site remote access services, please download and complete a Site-to-Site Remote Access Form.
